SBIRT

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive,
integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services.

 What Is Screening?

What Is A Brief Intervention?

What Is Referral To Treatment?

A Screening is a short questionnaire to confidentially look at your risk of current or future problems related to substance use, depression, or trauma.
This includes information about the severity of alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription drug use, and abuse.

A Brief Intervention is used to increase the awareness of your substance use. If there is a concern, the Behavioral Health Consultant encourages change in
behavior and motivates you to seek treatment.

Referral to Treatment is for those who continue to show significant symptoms
and do not respond to the Brief Intervention. Referral to Treatment can be an
internal referral for further services or an external recommendation for community-based mental health or substance abuse assessment.
Referral to treatment is necessary if screening scores are moderate or high.

SBIRT is Recommended

The National Commission on Prevention Priorities ranked the top 25 preventive services recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) on Preventable Burden (PB) and Return on Investment (RoI). On this list, alcohol screening and intervention ranked #4, just lower than childhood immunizations and smoking cessation.

The World Health Organization (WHO), USPSTF, and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma have endorsed routine SBIRT in primary care and Level 1 Trauma Centers.
